When you are making an attempt to lose weight soda pop is one of the worst drinks you can drink. You probably know that it's filled with chemicals and sugar, but you may not fully understand why this is so bad, especially as it relates to weight loss. Here are 2 major reasons why soda and weight loss do not work well together:
1) 1) - Soda increases acidity
2) 2) - Soda elevates your blood sugar
1) - Soda Increases Acidity
When your body is too acidic, it creates all types of unpleasant symptoms like fatigue, inflammation, aches and pains, reduced immune reaction, weight gain, and far more significant health conditions if acidity goes on for too long. All types of soda (even diet soda) have a strong acidifying effect on the body, so it contributes to gains in weight if you drink enough of it.
2) - Soda Elevates Your Blood Sugar
The high sugar content of soda has a powerful effect on your blood levels of glucose. In the moments after you drink soda, your pancreas must release a torrent of insulin to process that sugar. One time isn't such a major issue, but doing it multiple times per day causes an overproduction of insulin in your bloodstream, and excess insulin has been associated with obesity and insulin resistance (your cells become less sensitive to insulin so that more insulin is needed to process sugar).
Worse, once that sugar is processed, your blood sugar level dips down farther than it was before you drank the soda, and then you find yourself overcome with potent cravings for more sugar. Drinking diet soda for weight loss might not be the answer either, because research has proven that even artificially sweetened products can trigger the same insulin response in the body.
Soda and weight loss can't co-exist peacefully - unless you get creative.
Skip the brightly colored soda bottles and cans, irrespective of how captivating they look. As an alternative try making your own "soda". Commence with a tumbler of sparkling water and add a few spoons of fruit juice (no sugar added). If it's not actually sweet enough add a little natural sweetener like agave syrup or stevia. This may satisfy your soda craving, but without such terrible consequences.
The final analysis is, if you want to make your weight loss journey less complicated, you have to begin thinking of regular soda and weight loss as mortal enemies.
